The International Abalone Society (IAS) is an international forum, intended to promote research on abalone; facilitate the distribution of information on abalone; promote cooperation between abalone researchers and members of the abalone industry; and to recognize the achievements of individuals and organizations by the award of IAS International awards.
To achieve these objectives, the IAS distributes information thorugh electronic newsletters and this website, and also organizes international symposia, held at roughly three-yearly intervals. Previous International Abalone Symposia were held in Mexico (1989), Australia (1994), U.S.A. (1997), South Africa (2000), China (2003), Chile (2006), Thailand (2009), Tasmania (2012) and Korea (2015).
