Org. Setting and Reporting

The role of the EOSG is to support the Secretary-General in performing the function as "chief administrative officer" of the Organization, who shall act in that capacity and perform "such other functions as are entrusted" by the Security Council, General Assembly, Economic and Social Council and other United Nations organs. The Charter also empowers the Secretary-General to "bring to the attention of the Security Council any matter which in his opinion may threaten the maintenance of international peace and security." These guidelines both define the powers of the office and grant it considerable scope for action.

In the fall of 2021, the Secretary-General launched Our Common Agenda (OCA), offering his vision for more inclusive, networked, and effective multilateralism better suited to the challenges of an interconnected world in which no community or country can solve its challenges alone.

In that context, the Strategic Planning and Monitoring Unit (SPMU) in the Executive Office of the United Nations Secretary-General seeks motivated interns to support its work on the Secretary-General’s vision of a “UN 2.0” with stronger capabilities in data, innovation, digital, strategic foresight, and behavioural science to better support people and planet in the challenges of the 21st century – a key proposal put forward in Our Common Agenda.

Responsibilities

Our interns work as full members of our team, pursue projects that are designed to make a permanent difference and have opportunities to learn about the work of the entire UN System. Over the course of the assignment, the interns will contribute to different workstreams, incliuding – but not limited to:

4.Support to the design of UN 2.0 system-wide capability assessments, incl. survey analysis

5.Support to the management of stakeholder information

Competencies

Communication: Speaks and writes clearly and effectively. Listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately. Asks questions to clarify, and exhibits interest in having two-way communication. Tailors language, tone, style and format to match the audience. Demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.

Planning and organizing: Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies. Identifies priority activities and assignments; adjusts priorities as required. Allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work. Foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning. Monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary. Uses time efficiently.
