Start Date: This is a GJO used to build a pool of qualified candidates and will be used to fill internship vacancies between 1 July 2025 and 30 June 2026. This Internship is for a minimum of 3 months and maximum of 6 months and designed to be in person and remote. The duration and modality can be adjusted on request of the successful candidate.
Duties and Responsibilities
This internship is with the Human Rights Treaties Branch (HRTB). HRTB supports the work of the UN human rights treaty bodies—committees of experts that monitor how countries implement international human rights treaties.
Main tasks may include:
Assisting in the preparation and servicing of meetings for treaty bodies and their working groups.
Conducting legal and country research, and drafting background papers related to State reports and individual complaints.
Researching and summarizing the jurisprudence (case law) of treaty bodies.
Helping to process individual complaints and interstate communications submitted to treaty bodies.
Supporting the preparation of country visits for the Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture (SPT).
Taking notes during meetings and assisting with administrative tasks like document preparation.
Contributing to research, training materials, and capacity-building activities for States and other stakeholders.
Assisting in preparing reports for the UN General Assembly, Human Rights Council, and treaty body meetings.
Supporting the maintenance of treaty body databases and documentation systems.
Note: Daily tasks will vary depending on the assigned section (e.g., supporting a specific treaty body, the Capacity Building Programme, or associated Funds) and the intern’s own background and skills.

Qualifications:The minimum educational qualification required if A High School Diploma.
The applicant must also:
(a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent);
Experience: No prior experience is necessary. We seek candidates with relevant coursework in business administration, management, strategic communications and design, project management, public administration, law and legal administration (criminal justice), or human resources management. We are open to a broad range of educational/ project/ volunteering/ research experience backgrounds.
Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship fluency in English or French is required, knowledge of the other is an asset. Knowledge of another United Nations official language would be an advantage (i.e. Arabic, Chinese, Russian or Spanish).
